Protecting Immigrant Families Vigil

The Trump administration has officially proposed a new regulation that would block immigrant families from having a permanent, secure future in the United States.Under the new regulation, immigrants who legally access to basic health supports, safe housing, and healthy food programs could be denied admission to the country or refused a green card. The proposed rule also makes clear that earning low wages, having children, or dealing with a medical condition could be held against immigrants seeking a permanent future in the United States.

In addition to this, there are still many families that will spend the holidays separated because of the cruel administration policies. Join us in standing up for all immigrant families on December 5!

When: Wednesday, December 5 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Federal Center and Plaza (219 S Dearborn St.)
RSVP and and share on Facebook

Protest Erika Harold at Chicago Club City

  • 111 W Grand Avenue Chicago, IL 60654 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Erika Harold is an anti-LGBTQ, anti-woman candidate for Illinois Attorney General. Her views are out of touch with Illinois values.

As Erika and her supporters enter the City Club, we want to welcome them with a 𝙍𝘼𝙄𝙉𝘽𝙊𝙒 of pro-women and pro-LGBTQ folks. Bring signs, wear a shirt of your favorite progressive organization (or any color of the rainbow) and help show Erika that hate is NOT an Illinois value.

Illinois needs an Attorney General who understands that our laws should support the health and well-being of all of us. At a time when human rights and freedoms are under attack, we must elect an Attorney General who will lead the fight to protect our rights.

When: Thursday, October 25 from 11 a.m. to noon
Where: 111 W. Grand Avenue (across the street from Maggiano's Banquets)

---
Hundreds of Illinoisans committed to advancing environmental, economic, racial, and immigrant justice will come together on September 8 in Elwood, Illinois as part of a global day of action spearheaded by the People’s Climate Movement.

The People’s Climate Movement is asking everyone to “Rise for Climate, Jobs and Justice.” Demonstrators want to show our leaders and elected officials to commit to real solutions to the climate crisis.

The global day of action comes four days before the start of the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco and two months before the midterm elections.

No more stalling, no more delays: it’s time for a fast and fair transition to 100% renewable energy for all.

We chose to demonstrate in Elwood this year because the city is home to the nation’s third-largest container port. This industrial area is a key source of pollution in the region. Elwood is located in Will County, which has more than 300 warehouses, including those operated by notorious polluters Amazon and Walmart, both of which have received massive tax breaks from our local governments. Most warehouse jobs in the area are non-union, pay poverty wages and are filled by temp workers, the majority of whom are people of color and immigrants.

Real climate leadership rises from below. It means power in the hands of people not corporations. It means economic opportunity for workers and justice and dignity for frontline communities that are the hardest hit by the impacts of the fossil fuel industry and a warming world.

On September 8, we’re demanding that our local leaders commit to building a fossil free world that puts people and justice before profits.

We are at a crossroads. By acting together, we can end the era of fossil fuels and save the climate we all depend on.

Safe Zones Rally

Why hasn't Governor Rauner signed the Immigration Safe Zones Act (SB35) into law? Why doesn't he sign a bill that would limit ICE's access to schools, libraries, courthouses and hospitals? If Gov. Rauner cares about keeping our communities safe, he would support legislation that moves towards making Illinois a truly welcoming state for all immigrants.

Gov. Rauner needs to take action and support immigrant communities NOW! Time is running out for him to sign the Safe Zones Act (SB 35), No Registry Bill (SB 3488), and the VOICES Act (SB 34). Join us to send a loud and clear message that we need Gov. Rauner to stand with us.

When: Thursday, August 22 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: at Metropolitan Correctional Center (71 W Van Buren St.)
RSVP and Share on Facebook

Safe Zones Rally

Rally to ask Gov. Rauner to sign the Immigration Safe Zones Act (SB 35)

The Illinois General Assembly passed the Immigration Safe Zones Act (SB 35) which, if signed by Governor Rauner, would protect families and ensure the public safety of all people in Illinois. SB 35 addresses the threat of immigration arrests at schools, libraries, hospitals, and courthouses by directing the Illinois Attorney General to develop model policies for these locations to limit their cooperation with ICE. These agencies would also be required to remove any questions regarding immigration status from their forms unless otherwise required by law.

We are running out of time! Governor Rauner only has until August 28 to say whether he will veto or sign the bill. We have heard rumors that he won't, and we want to make sure he is listening to us. If Governor Rauner cares about the safety of our communities, he must sign the Safe Zones Act, NOW!

Confront Corruption / Demand Democracy Vigil

RSVP Here

Across the nation on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, we will Confront Corruption and Demand Democracy with a candlelight vigil at sundown. In Chicago, we will hold ours just south of 400 N. Michigan (the Tribune Tower), and facing the Trump Tower.

From attacks on the rule of law to conflicts of interest, ethics violations and flagrant abuse of government offices for personal gain, the corruption of the American government by the President, his associates and many in his party has reached a new, profound low.

Officials are trading on the power invested in our institutions for personal and financial gain rather than for the welfare of the American people. From attacks on the Russia investigation to ethics scandals in the highest offices in the land, we must reject attempts to shield corruption from political consequences, public scrutiny, and legal accountability.

These issues are on top of years of challenges to the basic health of our democracy: from money in politics to attempts to shape congressional districts to manipulate outcomes and laws written intentionally to exclude voters from participating in our democracy.

Together, we must confront corruption and demand democracy. For more information, visit confrontcorruption.org.

SUGGESTION: CAR POOL AND USE SPOT HERO OR PARKWHIZ FOR THE CHEAPEST PARKING LOTS IN THE AREA

WE WILL PROVIDE CANDLES (please donate $1 to offset costs), bring signs, and your friends. You will be our speakers, the people most affected by this widespread corruption and dysfunction, organizational leaders and grassroots activists who are working to hold the Trump administration accountable and create a democracy that works for everyone. Speakers will have two minutes to speak (please let us know if you'd like to speak - sharsand1950@gmail.com) - We will have a total of 30 minutes for all speakers so requests will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.
