“Melt the ICE!” by joining the knitted red hat resistance
Red “Melt the ICE” hats take their inspiration from Norway where a red tasseled hat called a nisselue in Norwegian, was considered a sign of patriotism and protest against Nazi occupation during World War II.
The red hat campaign was started by knitters at a Minneapolis-area shop, Needle & Skein. The campaign is collecting proceeds from the sale of the red hat pattern for two immigrant aid organizations focused on the Minneapolis area: STEP (St. Louis Park Emergency Program) and the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund.
In a social media post, Chicago shop Knit 1 said it will be partnering with local organizations to distribute its donated red hats in Chicago.
Buy the “Melt the ICE” red hat pattern (there is also a crochet version).
Participate in group stitch at Knit 1, 3856 N. Lincoln Ave, Chicago, on Friday, Feb. 13, from 12-5 pm CST.
