Indivisible Lincoln Square to Revisit Candidate Endorsement Rules at April 8 Steering Meeting
Indivisible Lincoln Square’s steering committee will meet on April 8 to take up one of the group’s most consequential internal questions: how and when to endorse political candidates. Current rules require a unanimous vote to endorse in Illinois primaries and a two‑thirds majority for general elections. The stricter primary threshold reflects the reality that Chicago primaries often feature multiple Democratic contenders, including more than one progressive, while general elections usually pit a single Democrat against a Republican.
On the agenda
Committee members will discuss criteria for evaluating progressive candidates before offering endorsements. Topics on the table include how to weigh a candidate’s published track record, members’ personal experiences with candidates, issue alignment, electability in Lincoln Square, and potential tradeoffs when no perfect option exists. The conversation aims to create clear, accountable standards so endorsements reflect neighborhood values and help build winning progressive power.
Local activists are encouraged to attend the meeting to offer input, share experiences with candidates, and help shape a policy that balances principled standards with practical politics.
